WHO WE ARE
The Military Alternatives Education Project works to ensure
that young people in our community have full and accurate information
about the life-changing decision of joining the military.
For the past five years we have staffed educational outreach tables
in each of the four Syracuse City High Schools on a monthly basis.
We provide students with information which might not otherwise be
accessible to them. We seek to inform students and parents of their
right to "opt out" from having their personal information
shared with military recruiters if they choose to do so.
This year we are reaching out more actively to build relationships
with staff, students and parents in schools to create a more ongoing
presence for our work to promote nonviolence, social justice and
youth efforts to make our community and world a better place for
all people.
OUR OPERATING PRINCIPLES
Young people deserve full information about choices that
they face regarding war and military service.
The community has a responsibility to ensure that young
people have sufficient access to this information.
We recognize that low-income and young people of color are
more heavily targeted by military recruiters and we will put special
emphasis on reaching these young people.
Participation in war is a life-changing decision and should
be undertaken only after serious thought and reflection.
Citizens in a democracy have a responsibility to question
and discuss policies related to war considered by their government.
We promote the nonviolent resolution of conflict-among people,
in our community and among nations.
Everyone has the right to a college education and job training.
They should be readily available and affordable.
