The
2011 Art for Peace Poetryand Poster Contest for Syracuse High School
students was a great success! We received over 55 entries that focused
on diversity, self-expression, identity, and, ultimately, the desire
to create a more peaceful community. After judging the submissions
with the help of the Syracuse Cultural Workers, we honored the winners
of the contest during our celebratory reception on Tuesday, April
26th at the ArtRage Gallery. At the reception, students proudly
shared their work and received art-related prizes. Georgia Popoff,
a local poet and long-time Peace Council supporter, delighted the
audience by reading inspiring poetry about diversity. Georgia and
her co-author Quraysh Ali Lansana, also shared poetry from their
new book Our Difficult Sunlight about creating poetry in the classroom.
The Art for Peace Contest showcases the creative talent of Syracuse
students and the Syracuse Peace Council is proud of its continuing
success.
The success of the project was due in large part
to the hard work of intern Elisabeth Hess, a Communications major
at Syracuse University. To apply for the Spring 2012 Art for Peace
Internship, contact Jessica
Maxwell, 472-5478.
