FEATURED CRAFTSPERSON Barry Gordon: Wooden Utensils Barry Gordon has been carving wood utensils since 1977, but now the only Craftsfair he attends is Plowshares. When asked why he explained, "it's the community." Barry started carving when he was at home with his daughter while his wife was teaching. He did a little hand carving, and was interested in cooking, so decided to combine the two passions. He makes his utensils from maple and other local woods, and specializes in table tools, spoons, and salad servers. "My work is done in the belief that our tools of daily living should be well designed and carefully made," said Barry. Barry and his wife had been attending Plowshares for many years, when one day they looked at each other and said, "Why don't you do this show?" The answer was simple: Why not? "Seeing lots of friends, hearing good music, and seeing good crafts" keeps Barry coming back. Even with all these reasons, he said community is the most important aspect of Plowshares. Last year at Plowshares, Barry said he saw the wife of his very first customer. Barry now spends his time teaching his craft and also serves on the Plowshares Organizing Committee. -Marissa Gidez |
