GET ACTIVE NOW

February 2010

SPC is always looking for new people to join our efforts to transform our community and the world. There are many, many ways to get involved. One way is to join a particular project that inspires you. Another is to help in a more general way, either with an ongoing task or as someone to be called for specific needs.

Check out the list below and then fill out our Volunteer Information Form and send it in to us. Download our brochure about Getting Involved (pdf)

The Peace Council welcomes Interns from universities, high schools or the general community.

Specific projects

Youth & Militarism: Military Alternatives Education Project
We are in the process of expanding this work to develop a stronger presence in the Syracuse City High Schools as well as connect with some rural schools. We seek to educate youth, parents and educators on military service/recruiting and their rights, alternatives to joining the military and to encourage youth activism.

End the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars
This group coordinates SPC's work to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They organize demonstrations, educational programs and other events. See upcoming events. They're currently working on efforts to reverse the hosting of "Predator Drones" at Hancock Field near Syracuse.

Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation
Promotes understanding of and respect for the Onondaga people and culture through educational and advocacy work. They work to support the Onondaga Nation’s Land Rights Action, seeking redress for the illegal taking of land and environmental cleanup. Specific current projects: Seeking a Syracuse Common Council Resolution of Respect for and Reconciliation with the Onondaga Nation, Stopping Hydrofracking, Onondaga Land Rights & Our Common Future II educational series and Historical Markers.

CNY Working for a Just Peace in Palestine & Israel
This new educational and advocacy effort focusses on achieving a just peace between Palestine and Israel. Coordinated by SPC, it includes participation from members of the Methodist Task Force on Peace w/Justice for Palestine/Israel, the Islamic Society of Central New York, Muslim American Society Syracuse, and Syracuse Jews for Peace.

Peace Newsletter
The monthly publication of the Syracuse Peace Council needs editorial committee members, writers, editors, artists, mailing partiers, layout people, distributors, researchers, ad arrangers.

Caribbean Latin America Coalition
CLAC is a partner organization of SPC. It's goals are: close the US Army's School of the Americas; maintain sister community relationships in El Salvador and Colombia; and end the US blockade of Cuba.

Greater Syracuse Progressive Coalition
Initiated by SPC and the Greater Syracuse Labor Federation, the coalition now has 14 organizational partners, and meets monthly to share information, support one another's work and find collaborative projects.

Bikes for Peace
SPC's summer bike program helps young people fix their own bikes and works with others to fix up donated bikes to give away. They have a full schedule of summer clincs..

Bill of Rights Defense Campaign
SPC is part of a coalition opposing the ever-increasing attack on our civil liberties since 9-11. Help us with speakers, buttons, fliers, legislative work.

Weekly Peace Outreach
Stand at busy intersections throughout the Syracuse area with signs calling for peace. Signmakers needed too, as well as people willing to make a weekly commitment to bring the signs to the site. For the winter, we're on sabbatical. Let us know if you're interested in joining us.

Community Engagement
SPC seeks out every opportunity for information tables at local and regional events. Join the tabling team, help design the displays, gather materials, lug stuff around, and talk with people. We're also forming a new Political Merchandise Committee to gather materials for outreach!

SPC Monthly Educational Programs
Select topics and speakers, help with set-up clean-up and food. Usually the third Thursday of the month from 7-8:30 pm at the ArtRage Gallery.

Radical Reading Group
This group is currently being revised. Generally meets twice monthly.

General Volunteering

Office volunteers
Come to the Peace Council during office hours (10 - 5 pm Mon - Fri). Help out by answering phones, making phone calls, run errands, and generally lend a hand. Time commitment varies, from a few hours to all day. There is a staff person on hand to help with questions.

Phoning
Lists of people need to be contacted by phone for a variety of reasons – to encourage people to come to an event, ask for volunteers or remind people it’s time to renew their Peace Newsletter subscription. Phoning can be done from home or the SPC office.

Flyering
Help hang up and distribute posters and flyers – either promoting an event or providing information.

Artists
Graphic artists are needed for poster, flyer, leaflet, and Peace Newsletter production.

Layout/Design
If you have layout skills and would like to help us develop flyers, posters, and other outreach materials, please let us know.

Researching
If you are a good researcher, we can use your skills for fact finding and checking.

Cooking/ Baking
At many SPC events we like to have food. If you enjoy cooking for others, we’d be thrilled.

Photographers/Videographers
We document our events ourselves – the mainstream media rarely does! We have a weekly cable access television program which needs good materials for broadcast.

Helping at events
We often need extra hands at events, such as demonstrations, parties, forums, Plowshares Craftsfair, etc.

Data Entry
This can be done during office hours or after. Requires computer experience and ongoing commitment.

IT Team
Join this group of radical technies to help SPC move ahead technologically, computers, etc.

Building and Grounds Maintenance
Our new home at the Syracuse Center for Peace and Social Justice has lots of work to be done, both inside and outside. Skilled handypeople, as well as people just willing to work, are welcome.
