GET
ACTIVE
June 2008
There are many ways to work with SPC. One way is to get involved with
a particular project you’re interested in. Another is to help in a more
general way, either with an ongoing task or as someone to be called for
specific needs.
Check out the list below and then fill out our Volunteer
Information Form and send it in to us.
The Peace Council welcomes Interns from
universities, high schools or the general community.
Specific projects
End the War Organizing Committee
This group coordinates SPC's work to end
the Iraq War. They organize actions, presentations and events. Their current
plans include organizing to show the video "Winter Soldier,"
a project in support of Iraq Veterans Against the War and planning for
the anniversary of the start of the war.
Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation
Promotes understanding of and respect for the Onondaga people and
culture through educational activities. Is working to support the Onondaga
Nation’s Land Rights Action seeking redress for the illegal taking of
land and environmental cleanup.
Military Alternatives Education

A coalition effort to educate youth, parents and educators on military
service/recruiting and their rights. Outreach to youth is a primary part
of the project.
Youth Against War
A student-led effort to end the war in Iraq and address other issues of
concern to youth. Meets every other Tuesday evening.
Hiroshima Day Commemoration
Each year, on or about August 6, the Peace Council works with other groups
to organize a dramatic procession to recall the horrors of the atomic
bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and call for the abolition of nuclear
weapons and nuclear power.
Peace Newsletter
The monthly publication of the Syracuse Peace Council needs editorial
committee members, writers, editors, artists, mailing partiers, layout
people, distributors, researchers, ad arrangers.
Greater Syracuse Progressive Coalition
Initiated by SPC and the Greater Syracuse Labor Federation, the coalition
now has 14 organizational partners, and is working to ensure voting integrity
in Onondaga County through paper ballots, optical scanners and marking
devices for people with disabilities.
Bikes for Peace
SPC's summer bike program helps young people fix their own bikes and
works with others to fix up donated bikes to give away. Over the winter
they are exploring the development of an ongoing bike clinic.
Bill of Rights Defense Campaign
SPC is part of a coalition opposing the ever-increasing attack on our
civil liberties since 9-11. Help us with speakers, buttons, fliers, legislative
work.
Weekly Peace Outreach
Stand at busy intersections throughout the Syracuse area with signs calling
for peace. Signmakers needed too, as well as people willing to make a
weekly commitment to bring the signs to the site. For the winter, we're
out every Thursday at lunch hour, noon-12:45 pm. You'll be seen by thousands.
Click for upcoming locations.
Media Accountability
Join a working group to promote responsible public media - support airing
Democracy Now! locally and relate to local cable access issues and FCC
relicensing of public radio stations.
Tabling Outreach and Education
SPC seeks out every opportunity for information tables at local and regional
events. Join the tabling team, help design the displays, gather materials,
lug stuff around, and talk with people. We're also forming a new Political
Merchandise Committee to gather materials for outreach!
SPC Monthly Discussion/Speaker Series
Select topics and speakers, help with set-up clean-up and food. Usually
the third Thursday of the month from 7-8:30 pm at the Westcott Community
Center.
Caribbean Latin America Coalition
CLAC is a partner organization with SPC. It's goals are close the
US Army's School of the Americas; maintain sister community relationships
in El Salvador and Colombia; and end the US blockade of Cuba.
Study Group on US Global Agenda
This ongoing group welcomes new people any time… please do the reading
first. Learn more about the US as empire builder and how to do something
about it. Meets 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month. New people welcome to
come to any meeting.
General Volunteering
Office volunteers
Come to the Peace Council during office hours (10 - 5 pm Mon - Fri)
and help out in a variety of ways. Answer phones, help make phone calls,
run errands, and generally help out. Time commitment varies, from a few
hours to all day. There is a staff person on hand to help with questions.
Phoning
Lists of people need to be contacted by phone for a variety of reasons
– to ask people to come to an event, ask for volunteers or remind people
it’s time to renew their Peace Newsletter subscription. Phoning
can be done from home or the SPC office.
Flyering
Help hang up and distribute posters and flyers – either promoting an event
or providing information.
Artists
Graphic artists are needed for poster, flyer, leaflet, and Peace Newsletter
production.
Layout/Design
If you have layout skills and would like to help us develop flyers, posters,
and other outreach materials, please let us know.
Researching
If you are a good researcher, we can use your skills for fact finding
and checking.
Cooking/ Baking
At many SPC events we like to have food. If you enjoy cooking for others,
we’d be thrilled.
Photographers/Videographers
We need to document our events ourselves – the mainstream media rarely
does! We have a weekly cable access television program which needs good
materials for broadcast.
Helping at events
We often need extra hands at specific events, such as demonstrations,
parties, forums, Plowshares Craftsfair, etc. Project volunteers are people
who can be called upon to help with these events.
Data Entry
This can be done during office hours or after. Requires computer experience
and ongoing commitment.
Database Management
If you have skills with Microsoft Access and would be willing to help
us with our database, we would be most appreciative.
Building and Grounds Maintenance
There is lots of work to be done at our building, both inside and outside.
Skilled handypeople, as well as people just willing to work, are welcome.
